Please note that this advertisement concerns application for training with subsequent admission to our Emergency Response Unit (ERU) Roster as a delegate. It does not concern a specific position within the Norwegian Red Cross.
What is an Emergency Response Unit?
An ERU ranges from a full-scale field hospital to smaller clinics and mobile teams. An important part of Red Cross’ international work is emergency assistance, both in zones of war/conflict and in areas suffering from natural disasters. When disaster strikes, we respond by deploying an “Emergency Response Unit”, referred to as “ERUs”. The units are designed to offer immediate short-term assistance. The Norwegian Red Cross has specialized in ERUs offering immediate medical assistance and health services, as well as psycho social support and water and sanitation units.
An ERU is composed of trained and experienced delegates from our emergency roster, accompanied by standardized equipment.
Currently, we are looking for physiotherapists with extensive experience from hospitals and municipality.
All applicants need to fulfil the following basic requirements:
- At least three years of working experience after formal education is completed.
- Permanent address in Norway
- Norwegian working permit
- Good written and oral English. Other languages are an asset.
- Above 25 years of age
- Driver’s licence class B – manual gir
How to become a delegate in the ERU roster:
The ERU roster of the Norwegian Red Cross is a large and comprehensive personnel base consisting of specialists who are able to respond to an international disaster on short notice. Most delegates have a full-time job in Norway with permission from their employer to take leave of absence if asked to go on mission by the Red Cross. The length of a mission may vary from a few weeks up to three months, and the delegate receives salary from the Red Cross while on a mission.
Delegates who are deployed usually have a high level of expertise in their field and several years of working experience prior to their first mission. In addition, the personal suitability of each delegate is carefully evaluated.
To become an ERU delegate you must apply to this announcement, complete our recruitment process and complete our training setup;
- WORC (World of the Red Cross). Online and approximately 20 hours.
- Stay safe – personal security. An online course concerning security in the field.Approximately 4 hours.
- IMPACT (International Mobilization and Preparation for ACTion). The course lasts one week and aims to prepare delegates for international field work with the Red Cross through theory and practical activities.
- ERU Training (Emergency Response Unit). ERU delegates must take this one week training, which mainly involves the set up and running of a field hospital as part of an ERU operation. This is a pass/non-pass training.
- Profile Specific trainings. For some profiles, there are profile specific trainings.
Once the delegate has completed the necessary training and courses, he or she will be included in the ERU roster and may be contacted by the Red Cross when there is an ERU deployment.
How to apply?
In order to apply for admission to the ERU Roster, the candidate must be available for IMPACT training between the 14th – 20th April, 2018. Candidates not available within this period will not be taken into consideration.

Suggested topics to touch upon in your application text are your; motivation, availability, professional mastery and experience with cross cultural cooperation and communication.
- CV: We ask you to upload a PDF or WORD version of your CV in English by clicking on the upload button at the bottom of the application page.Only applications and CVs in English will be taken into consideration.
